CORRECTIONAL SERVICES

Kensani Corrections is the joint venture partner to the GEO Group, a NYSE listed company and one of the largest providers of correctional and detention services in the world.

Kensani Corrections and the Geo Group were awarded the concession to design, build, finance and operate the 3,024 bed maximum security Kutama-Sinthumule Correctional Centre in the town of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) in the Limpopo province. The facility was named after two of the esteemed local chiefs, Kutama and Sinthumule. An overview the project can be seen by clicking on the video below.

The joint venture company, South African Custodial Services (SACS), holds a 25-year PPP contract with the Department of Correctional Services (DCS). The correctional facility has been in operation since 2002 and is regarded as one of the best examples of correctional services and rehabilitation in South Africa as a result of having achieved the following:

  • The only correctional centre on the continent to have achieved the ISO 9001 certification
  • Numerous tertiary academic achievements including the top sociology student at UNISA
  • The top learning centre for adult education and training centre in Makhado
  • Consistent recognition by the education authorities as a centre of excellence

During construction the project employed over a thousand women, all recruited from the area, and today the 600 staff members are employed only from the direct community, a large percentage of whom are women.

The Kutama-Sinthumule prison has up-skilled hundreds of staff in continuous training programs including social workers, psychologists, teachers, custodial officers, maintenance managers, program managers, technicians, doctors, nurses and many other vocations.
