“The government alone will not be able to carry the scale of the investment needed. That is why we are working to mobilise private-sector investment in rail and port operations, while ensuring that the infrastructure remains State-owned” Cyril Ramaphosa – South African President
RAIL & FREIGHT
CHALLENGE
EFFECIENCY
South Africa’s freight rail system is underperforming due to decades of underinvestment, poor maintenance, operational inefficiencies, and infrastructure vandalism.
RELIABILITY
Today, for every tonne of freight moved by rail in South Africa, roughly six tonnes are transported by road. This is not only significantly more expensive for long-distance, bulk freight, but also imposes heavy burdens on road infrastructure, while increasing road accident rates.
COST
Many sectors of the economy have suffered substantial decline and cost increases resulting from poor freight.
OPPORTUNITY & SOLUTION
The Minister of Transport has initiated a structural reform program aimed at opening the freight rail sector to private participation.
The stated objective is to increase national freight rail volumes from approximately 150 million tons to 260 million tons within five years.
Private-sector participation opens the door for new Kensani Rail & Freight to offer an efficient and cost-effective service to our clients.
Kensani Rail & Freight has established a Train Operating Company (TOC) focused on providing efficient, reliable and cost-effective freight rail solutions for under-served clients.
